School Safety and Preparedness

I doubt there are many school communities in the U.S., or even around the world, who aren't grieving for the students and families of the Margory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. And I use the word "community" intentionally because these sorts of tragic events touch the lives of so many, extending far beyond the boundaries of the schoolyard. Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends, acquaintances, neighbors, students, teachers, administrators, cities, counties, states, and beyond. Anyone who has ever sat in a classroom or has put a child on a school bus or has dropped a child at a school's front door feels this tragedy, deeply. We all mourn.

Bright School is no different. We will comfort each other, but we also are taking action to reassess the security of our school and the safety of everyone living here each day. Coincidentally, just last week we had two officers from the Hamilton County Office of Emergency Management visit Bright School to lay out a plan for evaluating our security and emergency procedures. In the next few weeks, they will be here at school quietly observing our operation and areas of access. They will also be training our teachers and staff later in March about how best to act in certain threatening situations.

We won't be alone. As I said, all schools are mourning the loss of the beautiful students and teachers in Parkland. At the same time, they will be determining the wise and responsible ways they can all keep their communities safe and secure. Bright School will act as well.

Bright's Got Talent

Can you sing, dance, play a musical instrument or maybe even do some magic tricks? If so, have we got an evening for you! Bright's Got Talent, the sixth annual talent show for students in grades 2-5, is March 9. If you would like for your child to participate in this show, please download and sign this form and return it to the main office no later than Friday, March 2.

There will be an informational meeting on Friday, March 2 from 3-3:30 p.m. in the theater for students who are signed up to perform. We will have a practice session and a dress rehearsal the week of March 5. Days and times will be sent before February 23. In order to perform for the actual live show, children must attend the practice and dress rehearsal. Each act is limited to a two-three minute performance, and you must provide your own music, props and/or costumes. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Renee' Kropff.

We look forward to a fun and entertaining evening seeing all our Bright School stars SHINE!

Turn in Box Tops by Friday

Collect Box Tops at home and ask your family and friends to contribute! Send them in, labeled with your child's name, grade and teacher, by this Friday. The overall school winner will receive a customized S'well water bottle that can be reused daily and filled with the new water fountain at school. Remember, our goal this year is to collect 12,000 Box Tops to pay for the new water fountain/bottle filling station by the gym.
