Winning is i-n-t-o-x-i-c-a-t-i-n-g! That was the word fourth grader Anna Zmaj spelled correctly to win this year's Spelling Bee. Second place was Pei-Ying Olsen, also fourth grade, and third place was fifth grader Patrick Rice.

They will next compete in the regional bee.

There were 45 fourth and fifth graders who competed in this year's bee, which was different than in year's past because of the pandemic. Only the competitors sat in the Centennial Theater, and everyone sat six feet apart and wore masks except when spelling.

Anna spelled the winning word in the 10th round. Before that, she spelled scallion, Aztec, patent and unnoticed in earlier rounds.
