During their unit of study on weather, fourth graders learned about causes and effects of weather patterns as well as the importance of safety and preparedness. Students researched a weather-related topic of their choice and wrote a five-paragraph essay about their findings.
They also discussed the recent weather events like Hurricane Helene and the California wildfires. The more students learned about the devastation in California, the more they wanted to help.
Student Nora Hanzelik noted that, “Smog from wildfires can cause health problems,” which motivated her to lend a hand in raising funds and awareness.
Teacher Mrs. Kristen Von Glahn encouraged students to research ways to help victims of the wildfires. Inspired by last year’s fifth grade “Stick with Hope” project, her students decided to create their own stickers and sell them to raise money for Habitat for Humanity’s ReBUILD LA fund.
Student Hadley Kendrick said of the project, “I don’t like it when people in the world are hurting. I am committed to making the world a better place.”
Fourth graders are planning to do just that. They have been hard at working making stickers as well as creating posters to advertise their project. They will be selling stickers outside the bookstore each morning next week, January 27-31, from 7:40-8 a.m. Stickers are $1 each.
