Verbo “Ser” y “Estar” (Verb “to be”)

The Verb “Estar” is used to indicate location and position. Estar also expresses changing conditions such as health and mood, unexpected changes in the condition of a person, place, or thing, conditions that cause emotions and weather. Remember: Always use the á in estás, está and están.
*Estar is used to indicate location and position:
Tu abrigo está en la silla. Your coat is on the chair. ¿Dónde está mi sombrero? Where is my hat? Paris está en Francia. Paris is in France.
*Estar is used to indicate changing conditions:
Emily está enferma. Emily is sick. La sopa está fria.The soup is cold. El salón está sucio. The classroom is dirty. El día está nublado. The day is cloudy.
The verb “Ser” is used to refer to the essential characteristics of a person or thing (color, size, material, occupation, nationality, identity). Ser is also used to indicate time, dates, and ownership.
Remember: In Spanish, the subject pronoun it is contained in the verb and does not exist separately.
Es un perro. It is a dog. Son las tres de la tarde. It is three o’clock. Hoy es Lunes. Today is Monday. El lápiz es mío. The pencil is mine. La casa es blanca. The house is white. Yo soy Americano. I am an American. Ella es maestra. She is a teacher.
