5th Grade Curriculum

Math

This year's math curriculum will be based on NCTM standards and principles.  Supplemental resources will include:

  • Investigations in Number, Data, and Space
  • 5th and 6th Grade Everyday Math
  • Marcy Cook Manipulatives and Mini-Centers
  • Related Websites
  • Various Math Games and Manipulatives
  • Accelerated Math & Math Facts in a Flash
  • Daily Word Problems
  • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Activities

Units:

  1. Numbers & Operations
  2. Patterns, Functions, and Algebra
  3. Geometry: 2-D and 3-D
  4. Measurement
  5. Data & Probability

A typical day in math will begin with a critical thinking activity.  It will be followed by a short teacher-directed lesson.  After a reinforcement activity for the lesson, the remainder of the class time will be WORKSHOP.  Workshop will be comprised of centers where the students may be asked to work with a team, a partner, or individually.  This is also the time that I will use to work with small groups or individuals needing extra help or an additional challenge.  Students will be expected to verbally justify their thinking with their classmates and write their ideas in a journal.

My goal is for the students to gain confidence in their math abilities,  see math everywhere in their environment, apply problem solving strategies, and  know that math can be fun.

Units of study and homework can be accessed by going Inside 5th Grade.

LANGUAGE ARTS

The fifth grade language arts program provides instruction in reading and writing using a workshop format.

Reading Workshop

The purpose of this component of the fifth grade language arts program is to empower students with the strategies needed to monitor their own comprehension whether they are reading fiction or non-fiction.  Comprehension is reinforced at all cognitive levels as students study the different genres of literature through class read alouds, small book groups, buddy reading, and independent reading.  My goal is the same as Gail Boushey and Joan Moser say in their book the daily 5, which states that teachers should help each student “move from being a “survival” reader to a lifelong reader who chooses to read for knowledge and pleasure.” (2006, p.31)  During workshop students will practice strategies that allow them to become better readers, to broaden their vocabulary, to learn something new, and to improve their writing.

Writing Workshop

The purpose of this component of the fifth grade language arts program is to help students further develop their skills as writers and their knowledge of language usage by providing time to practice writing and by offering focused instruction through conferences, guided writing, and focused lessons.  My goal is to help students improve their writing by offering them time to practice using different writing strategies.  During workshop students will work to become better writers, to improve their spelling and grammar skills, to use their expanding vocabularies, but most importantly to express themselves and share their ideas.
