Literacy block – We spend our
mornings enjoying reading, writing, stories, and learning about strategies to
make us the best real reader possible. We will continually work on the tools we need to make us great readers
and writers.
We follow the Singapore Program
Math In Focus, which aligns with the National Standards of Mathematics as our
guide through 7 units of study. The Singapore math program encourages less units
that are more in-depth for mastery. This program is differentiated to meet the
needs of all students.
Math Facts with single digits
though 18 are a very important foundation for the children to have
“automatized”. Research tell us that
most of this must come from home as time is very limited in the classroom. Please make sure your child spends time nightly
working on these facts until they pour from their heads automatically so that
they can save their mental energy to solve problems. Math Facts are the basis of all math from
this moment on. Math Fact Tests will be
given weekly. Please click on the link below to see more about the online components to Math In Focus.
Our online Math Textbook can be viewed at this website now, and other components will be added as they are available.

Spelling will be more of a word
study helping our children to understand how words work and come to be. We will continually work on the
high-frequency words that we use in writing daily. These words will continue to be on our
spelling list until they are automatized so that we can spend our mental energy
on what we want to say as an author. Challenge words will be added weekly. Tests will be each Friday.
Science - Each week, the children
are attending Science in the Science lab with Mrs. McMillan. This semester, we
are studying weather, and next semester, we will enjoy learning about the
interdependency within the Coral Reef followed by Frogs and Toads and the interdependency
within the pond.
Social Studies - Beginning with the
understanding of rules and why it is important to have them within a community,
we will explore interdependency within our class, school, family, and local
government.
