First Grade Curriculum
The First Grade Language Arts curriculum is comprised of several components. These are reading, spelling and phonics, grammar, writing, and handwriting.
Reading
Confident readers are those who practice, practice, practice reading. We believe that the more they read the better readers they will be. Based on this philosophy we offer many opportunities for children to read throughout the day. This is done in individual work, partner reading, small group reading, and shared reading as a large group. Emphasis is divided equally between phonics and comprehension. We have a diverse library of rich literature from which the children can choose books of interest to read.
Spelling and Phonics
The spelling component is based on the long and short vowel sounds as well as special spellings, diphthongs, and diagraphs. Weekly spelling words are based on the phonics rules that are being studied at that time.
Grammar
The grammar component is based on the Daily Oral Language Program. Rules of punctuation, noun/verb agreement, capitalization, and parts of speech are studied on a daily basis.
Writing
The writing component uses all of the above to develop independent and creative writers who can transfer these isolated skills into edited and finished pieces of work.
Handwriting
Our handwriting component is based on the D’Nealian alphabet which encourages a natural flow into cursive writing at a later date.
The First Grade Math Curriculum
The First Grade Math Curriculum is based on the Everyday Math Program created by the University of Chicago. It is a spiraling program designed to allow children to develop mastery of math concepts and skills over the period of a year. Some of these concepts are: a sense of numbers, measurement in the form of telling time, money, linear measurement and volume, geometry, problem solving, and memorization of the basic addition and subtraction facts.
The First Grade Social Studies Curriculum
The First Grade Social Studies Curriculum is based on a common theme of JOURNEYS. These journeys take us to: Africa, the New World, Antarctica, and Space. Our other units are those of Community Celebrations, Presidents, and people of historical significance.
