Experiential Learning in the Great Outdoors!

When it comes to learning, hands-on experiences have a unique way of grabbing the attention of a child. Children, naturally curious, are eager to examine new concepts and make discoveries using all of their senses. Mindful of this, Bright School announces an ambitious expansion of the Benjamin W. Kilbride Enrichment Center an outdoor classroom and learning environment unlike any other in the Chattanooga region.

The expansion is an interdisciplinary outdoor learning environment that will combine elements of science, art, music, mathematics, social studies, and humanities. A labyrinth, an amphitheater, a covered pavilion, a water garden, musical elements, an alphabet garden and sculptures are prominent features.

In addition, new play sculptures, swings, climbing boulders, and an outdoor amphitheater for impromptu performances will allow children to do what they do best explore, imagine, and play.

Children will learn about the physical world through active investigation in an experiential environment that will stimulate imaginations and enhance learning in new and innovative ways.

An outdoor classroom is ideal for an emergent curriculum, one that is formed around children's interests, said O.J. Morgan, Bright School Headmaster. Teachable moments are the stuff of everyday existence, and by providing these wonderfully experiential spaces, Bright School will be able to provide its students many moments of good, meaningful learning.

Laughing and learning, children will soon discover that concepts taught outdoors are just plain fun!

We wish to thank all supporters of the Kilbride Expansion for their continued commitment to the children of Bright School. If you are interested in joining them in supporting this exciting expansion, contact the Bright School Development office at (423) 267-8546, extension 128.
