First graders honed their writing skills by creating a chapter book about Bright School. Each wrote a chapter on various aspects of first grade such as math, reading, music, lunch and recess.

Students in Mrs. Evans' class wrote their chapters and drew a picture to go with it. Each student created a cover, and they will take home a copy of the book.

The writing demonstrated how excited they were about each activity and not just P.E. and recess! In the Lucy Calkins writing workshop method, studnets write hard and easy words even if they don't know how to spell them. They sound out difficult words and write them as best they can so they don't get hung up on spelling and can keep their creative process going.

After the book was complete, Mrs. Evans put the pages on the screen, and each child read aloud his or her chapter to the class.
