With guidance from science teacher Melanie Nestler, fifth graders lead the composting efforts at school. They collect raw fruits and vegetables left over from lunch and place them in the composter. They add grass clippings, sticks, leaves and other organic matter to mix with the food scraps. After about six months, they get the thick, rich compost soil. Mrs. Nestler then adds it to the science garden behind the second grade classrooms. The school will soon add a second composter.
