Students, parents, faculty, and alumni gathered for the first-ever outdoor community tree lighting. A concert by hand bells, the chorus and instrumental soloists preceded the introduction of alumni, who came forward to receive their candy canes. The tree lights came on after the singing of "The First Noel."

Traditionally, a similar event is held in the theater with a visit by Santa as the big finale. Due to the pandemic, that event was held outdoors on the track last year, and this year Santa is coming later.

This evening event allowed for more alumni of many ages to return to school. Traditonally, the most senior employee of the school gives out the candy canes. This year, that is business manager Sabrina McAllister, who has been working at Bright since 1985.

The event, held outdoors in the courtyard, had several elements similar to many years past.

Christmas Memory from Jasper Reynolds, Class of 1950
“Santa Claus’ visit was the most exciting of all events. This Christmas program opened with the fourth, fifth and sixth graders marching into the auditorium singing “The First Noel” followed by other carols. Then the curtains of the stage parted to reveal a huge tree, and Santa arrived to squeals of delight and delivered a present to every child.”

School Founder Mary G. Bright (head of school 1913-1961) loved Christmas and started many traditions we continue today. This is from a report to the Board of Trustees she wrote in 1948:
“The carol singing by the 4th, 5th and 6th grades, the Christmas tree and Santa Claus are now so traditional that many old boys and girls return for the festivities. Some who are away at school come straight here from the train. Needless to say, the auditorium is strained to the limit by the crowd.”
