Teacher Sonal Patel, dressed in a sari, talked to students about Diwali, the Festival of Lights in India. They learned a dance and took home candles to represent the diyas used in celebrations.

Miss Sonal read a book to students about students just like them talking to their class about the different ways they celebrate Diwali. She showed them a video of people dancing during a Diwali celebration. Then she taught them a dance with sticks.

She brought a traditional diya, which is an oil lamp, used in Diwali celebrations. The students took home little battery-operated candles to remember their lesson about Diwali.

The students asked many questions about her sari and jewelry such as how the fabric is wrapped and where she got the jewelry. She said her mother came to help her dress, and her jewelry came from visiting family in India.
